Germany 1 – 2 Japan: Substitutes Doan, Asano’s goals stun former champions

The world witnessed another surprise on Wednesday as Japan came from a goal down to beat Germany 2-1, thanks to goals by second half substitutes Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano.

Another World Cup magic came into play as Japan scored two goals within eight minutes to cancel an early deficit.

Saudi Arabia had stunned Argentina in an unexpected upset on Tuesday, beating the Lionel Messi-led side 2-1.

On Wednesday, Germany dominated from the start and Ilkay Gundogan broke the deadlock when he converted from the spot in the 33rd minute.

Germany took the lead into the break, but Japan came back more determined not to go down without a fight.

Substitute Ritsu Doan equalised for the Blue Samurai before Takuma Asano nailed the victory in the 83rd minute.

The game went down inside the Khalifa International Stadium.
