Portugal began their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign with a tense 3-2 victory against the Black Stars of Ghana at Stadium 974 in Doha on Thursday.

There was little in terms of goalscoring action in the opening period but things lit up when Cristiano Ronaldo was felled in the area by Mohammed Salisu. The 37 year-old dusted himself to convert from twelve yards to open his account in Qatar. Also, the goal ensured he set a new record for being the only player to score in five FIFA World Cups.

Further strikes from Joao Felix and Rafael Leao ensured the three points for Fernando Santos’ side, while Andre Ayew and Bukari both found the net for the Black Stars.
