Elsewhere at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, Liverpool took a giant step into securing a semi-final berth in this season’s UCL, courtesy of a 3-1 win against hosts Benfica. The Reds who are very much in the hunt for an unprecedented quadruple, extended their UEFA Champions League 100% away win record as Ibrahima Konate (who scored his first goal for the club), Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz (who netted his first UCL goal for the Reds) gave Jurgen Klopp’s side a two-goal cushion ahead of the return leg at Anfield.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has named fit-again defender Trent Alexander-Arnold in his line-up while Colombian international Luis Diaz makes his first UCL start for Liverpool. Sadio Mane and Mo Salah will be heavily relied upon to provide the goods upfront.

Benfica’s Starting XI that will take on Liverpool at the Estadio da Luz Stadium in Lisbon tonight. There are some Premier League experienced players such as Jan Vertonghen and Nicholas Otamendi in the heart of defence not forgetting the club’s best player this season in striker Darwin Nunez who will lead the frontlines for the Portuguese outfit.

As for Atletico Madrid, the duo of Antonie Griezmann and teenager Joao Felix will spearhead the attack lines for Diego Simeone’s men. The usual suspects in Koke and Marco Llorente are also in the mix.

City boss Pep Guardiola has included the likes of Riyad Mahrez, John Stones and Bernardo Silva in his line-up. Raheem Sterling will play in the false nine position for the Cityzens.

What is at stake for all four teams tonight is a place in the semi-finals of Europe’s premier club competition and a favourable result in the first leg today will surely go a long way in ensuring passage into the last-four. As usual, there are no away goals rule – meaning that all teams will be compelled to come out and score the goals needed to see them through to the next round.

The path to the quarter-finals saw Manchester City whip Sporting CP of Portugal 5-0 on aggregate in the Round-of-16, Atletico Madrid overcame Manchester United 2-1 to reach the last-eight. Liverpool saw off Inter Milan 2-1 on aggregate and Benfica edged Ajax Amsterdam 3-2 over two legs.

Tonight’s pair of fixtures will see Premier League side Manchester City welcome Spanish La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid to the Etihad in what is the biggest tie of the day, while Portuguese Primeira Liga outfit Benfica will take on six-time winners Liverpool at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon.
