Chelsea Football Club is 117 years old today, 10th of March 2022. In the course of the 117 years, the club has won all the major trophies they have contested. The FIFA Club World Cup was the missing feather in the hat, but they bagged the trophy last February.
Achieving these major wins under the ownership of Russian Oligarch, Roman Abramovich, but the last bottle of champagne popped in celebration seems to have ushered in chaos.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict has led to major sanctions for Russian Oligarchs and Roman Abramovich is no different. Abramovich made a desperate attempt to sell the club after his initial move to have the Chelsea foundation take control of the club failed.
The sale of Chelsea have also been put on hold after the UK Government sanctioned Roman Abramovich freezing his assets. Abramovich was described in the official presser from the government as a ‘pro-Kremlin oligarch’.
What the sanction entails for Chelsea is that the club is prohibited from selling tickets to home and away fans. Season tickets still valid, no merchandise sales allowed, no transfers, no contract renewals.
Throwing the future of the Club in doubts. There are a number of senior players like Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, and Andreas Christensen, that need contract renewals but in light of this new situation might be let go.
Chelsea are only allowed a maximum of £500,000 on staging games and a maximum of £20,000 on any travel for away games which could be a serious headache logistically for Champions League matches.
This situation leaves Chelsea in a precarious state. The club would find it difficult to compete as a result of the restriction placed on them. They won’t be able to sign new players to bolster the squad as contracts run out.
Also, the UK government will decide the next owner of the club which Roman Abramovich was trying to ensure would be someone with the club’s best interest at heart.
Having a billionaire owner that has the best interest of the club has turned from a blessing to a curse for Chelsea. Where do they go from here? Will they still be competing in the top flight of European competitions or would the reign of the Blues fizzle out?

The sanction on chelsea by the UK government is presumed to be injustice and too hard done, the conflict rocking Russia and Ukraine needs to be well sorted and addressed rather than creating problems for multitude of innocent people.
