Premier League confirms that festive fixtures to go ahead as planned, inspite of Covid-19

Clubs in the Premier League and in the English Football League (EFL) have opted to fulfil their festive fixtures, amidst rising Coronavirus cases in the country.

All twenty Premier League clubs had met on Monday to discuss the festive fixture schedule, following the postponement of six domestic matches last weekend. In the end, no vote took place which means that there will be two rounds of fixtures across five days – beginning from 26th December, while the EFL revealed they will continue to play matches “where it is safe to do so”.

Prior to Monday’s meeting, it was widely expected that the postponement of one round of games over Christmas was likely – with Matchday 20 which starts on December 28th being postponed, in order to ease the pressure on Premier League squads.

Instead, clubs have been advised that if they have 13 fit players plus a goalkeeper, they should fulfil their games. Also, FA Cup replays in Rounds Three and Four have been SCRAPPED and talks are ongoing on whether to reduce EFL Cup semi-final ties to one-leg matches.

As for the lower-tier of English football widely known as the EFL, the body says it anticipates further postponements, but sees “optimism that disruption can be minimised.”

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS VS CHELSEA:

Inter Milan terminates contract of Christian Eriksen

Italian Serie A outfit Inter Milan have confirmed that they have terminated the contract of Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen.

The reigning domestic champions announced they have mutually agreed to terminate Christian Eriksen’s contract, as he continues to rehabilitate from the cardiac arrest he suffered while representing Denmark during the UEFA European Championship (Euro 2020).

The 29 year-old has not played competitive football since collapsing during his country’s opening Euro 2020 match against Finland in June. The former Ajax and Tottenham Hotspurs player had resumed training on his own, but it was at a facility arranged by his former club in Denmark.

Eriksen joined Inter Milan from Tottenham Hotspurs in January 2020 on a four-and-a-half-year contract. Though he struggled initially under then-coach Antonio Conte, he later became one of the key members of the Nerazzurri side – helping the team to win the 2020/2021 Serie A title, which was their first domestic title in 11 years.

While Inter would have wanted to keep Eriksen, he is legally unable to play in Italy because he has a heart defibrillator implanted. The only way he could have played in the Serie A is if the ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) that was inserted following his cardiac arrest was removed.

Inter Milan have released a statement confirming the Dane’s departure and said “a strong and indissoluble bond will remain” between the club and Eriksen.

Following the termination of Eriksen’s contract, he is now free to look for a new club.

Burnley vs Watford Postponed as a result of Covid-19

The Matchday 17 clash between Burnley and Watford Football Club has been postponed, due to Covid-19 outbreak in the camp of the away side.

Burnley had made the announcement of the game being postponed via social media, with the Premier League revealing in a statement that Watford had “an insufficient number of first-team players available to fulfil the match”.

Furthermore, it added that the decision was taken “with regret” and apologised for “the inconvenience and disruption caused”.

A club statement read: “The Premier League understands this decision will disappoint and frustrate fans who were due to attend this evening’s game.”

The Premier League added: “In considering any application to postpone, the board considers a range of sporting and medical factors. Each decision is taken on a case-by-case basis with everyone’s health of utmost importance.

“In light of the recent rise in Covid-19 cases across the country, the Premier League has reintroduced emergency measures. These include protocols such as more frequent testing, wearing face coverings while indoors, observing social distancing and limiting treatment time.”

This is the third Premier League game in a matter of days to suffer postponements, after Tottenham Hotspurs tie with Brighton and Hove Albion was called off and Brentford’s game against Manchester United was postponed on Tuesday.
