Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal: Champions League looks bleak for Gunners as they suffer crushing defeat in Newcastle

Arsenal’s dream of returning to the Champions League have been slammed after they a painful 2-0 defeat at Newcastle.

A Ben White own-goal in the 55th minute as well as a goal from Guimaraes was enough for Newcastle to bag all three points. The Gunners will hope they win their final game of the season while their North London rivals, Tottenham, lose theirs.

Goal! Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal

It’s all happening at St James’ Park! Callum Wilson goes close from 50 yards before Arsenal are denied at the other end… and then Bruno Guimaraes seals the win with a second!

Callus Wilson put the Magpies in front! It is counted as a Ben White own-goal.

Second Half

We’re back in action for the second half. A big 45 minutes in Arsenal’s season. Can Newcastle pick up where they left off in the first half?

Newcastle have come out swinging in the first 45 minutes. Arsenal will have to do a lot in the second half.

And so it begins for the Gunners! Tonight, the world would know how much a return to Champions League means to the North London club.

What’s at Stake

After Tottenham scrapped to a 1-0 victory over Burnley on Sunday to follow up their emphatic north London derby success, the Gunners need to win at St James’ Park to keep their Champions League fate in their own hands going into the final day of the season.

Despite their damaging 3-0 defeat against Tottenham on Thursday, Arsenal know two wins from their final two games will be enough to secure a top-four finish.

But it is unlikely to be an easy night on Tyneside against a Newcastle side vastly improved under Eddie Howe and playing their final home game of the season.
