RB Leipzig frontman Christopher Nkunku has been named the 2021/2022 Bundesliga Player of the Year, following his terrific goalscoring exploits this season.
The 24 year-old Frenchman who won a record-breaking four Player of the Month awards, was handed the biggest individual accolade over some impressive and marquee rivals that includes Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich and Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund.

Nkunku netted 20 times in the Bundesliga this season and on 34 occasions in all competitions and he also reached double figures in assists this campaign. It marked a dramatic improvement on total involvements from his past two seasons where he found the net 20 times in 2019/2020 and struck 13 goals in the 2020/2021 respectively.
Nkunku’s goal contributions helped Leipzig overturn a dreadful start to the season to finish in fourth place – thereby securing qualification for the UEFA Champions League for next season. That rich vein of form saw him being handed a maiden call-up to the French national team during the international break in March and he looks likely to make coach Didier Deschamps’ squad for the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup later this year in Qatar.

The annual Player of the Year Award, which was first handed out at the end of the 2018/2019 campaign, is decided via the Bundesliga’s team of the season fan votes, as well as clubs and a panel of experts.
