PSG 1-1 Lens: Messi screamer hands Les Parisiens Ligue 1 title as Danso sees Red for the visitors

French capital outfit Paris Saint Germain reclaimed their domestic crown, after playing out a 1-1 draw with Lens on Saturday night to emerge champions of the 2021/2022 Ligue 1 season.

A 68th minute screamer in the second half from Argentine superstar Lionel Messi after being teed up by Neymar, ensured that Les Parisiens reclaimed the domestic league crown they had ceded to LOSC Lille Metropole last season.

The opening half of the encounter saw little goalmouth action as scores stood level at the break but the tie turned on its head when the visitors were reduced to ten men, following the sending off of Kevin Danso. Danso was shown a second yellow card by centre referee Amaury Delerue which ultimately led to his subsequent dismissal.

PSG thought they should have been awarded a penalty in the 79th minute when striker Kylian Mbappe broke into the box and went over after a challenge from an opposition player, but the referee waved off appeals for a penalty.

Despite the numerical disadvantage and having conceded minutes later, Corentin Jean equalized for Lens when he received a well-taken defence-splitting pass inside the box and buried the ball into the bottom left corner to rescue a point from the encounter but it mattered little to Mauricio Pochettino’s side as they only needed to avoid defeat to be crowned champions for the 2021/2022 Ligue 1 campaign.

This will be PSG’s tenth top-flight crown in their history while the draw means that Lens are still in the hunt for a continental ticket, as they bid to qualify for European football for the first time since 2007/2008.
