AFCON FINAL: Senegal (4) 0-0 (2) Egypt, Mane scores decisive spot kick to help Teranga Lions lift AFCON trophy for the first time ever

SENEGAL ARE CHAMPIONS OF AFRICA

Sadio Mane, who saw a penalty saved in the fifth minute of the match, tucks away the deciding spot kick in the shootout.

Senegal beat Egypt 4-2 on penalties.

After 120 minutes, the AFCON Champions would be decided by penalties!

Extra Time

We are into extra time now and the game is getting really intense.

Full Time

90 minutes not enough to decide the Champions. We would be going into extra time.

Who will lift the trophy?

The tension is building here!

Second Half

The second 45 is up and running and both teams are going for the jugular.

Half-time

It has been a cagey 45 minutes, there is still another half to be played to determine the champion of Africa.

PENALTY SAVED!

A dramatic start to the AFCON final – Sadio Mane sees his penalty brilliantly saved by Abou Gabal Ali.

Kickoff!

Here we go! Will Egypt lift the trophy for a record 8th times or will Senegal lift the trophy for the first time in their history?

After 51 games, 24 teams have been whittled down to just two as Senegal and Egypt meet in the final of the African Cup of Nations
Liverpool teammates Mo Salah and Sadio Mane will lead their respective nations out at the Olembe Stadium in the Cameroonian capital of Yaounde, knowing they are each 90 minutes – or maybe a little longer – from lifting the trophy.

Egypt are already the most successful side in AFCON history, having won the tournament on seven occasions, though not since the last of a straight hat-trick of wins in 2010.
Senegal, meanwhile, have never won the title, a failing that has earned them the unwanted tag of African football’s great underachievers.

Intriguingly, this clash is the first in a huge trilogy, with the countries set to meet again in a two-legged World Cup qualification playoff next month.

Egypt will not have their manager, Carlos Queiroz, in the dugout this evening after he was shown a red card for his protestations during the semi-final win over Cameroon.

He wasn’t best pleased afterwards, either, once again complaining about the standard of officiating at the tournament.

Team News

The big news from that Senegal team news is that Watford man Ismaila Sarr comes into the lineup to make his first start of the tournament.

The winger was injured and missed the group stages but joined up with the side once the knockout stages had begun and now gets a start in the final.
