Senegal has knocked out Cape Verde from the AFCON tournament in a dramatic round of 16 clash. Sadio Mane and Bamba Dieng were on the scoresheet for the tournament favourites, who were helped out by red cards given to Cape Verdean duo Patrick Andrade and keeper Vozinha.
The last-16 stage of the Africa Cup of Nations continued this afternoon as Senegal took on Cape Verde for a place in the quarter-finals. Pre-tournament favourites Senegal were hugely underwhelming in the group stage.
Though they eventually finished top of Group B, they did so despite scoring only one goal, a 97th-minute penalty to win their opening game against Zimbabwe, before back-to-back goalless draws against Malawi and Guinea.
In the first half, Cape Verdean midfielder Patrick Andrade was initially shown a yellow card for catching Gueye high, but after a VAR review he was sent off.
Liverpool star Sadio Mane was involved in a nasty head collision, then scored a beautiful goal for Senegal before being subbed off with a suspected concussion.
Mane took the ball in a swift counter-attack but the Cape Verdean goalkeeper, Vozinha, rushed out and it resulted in a nasty collision. The goalkeeper was shown a red card after the referee consulted VAR. Mane was still allowed to play and he scored a beautiful goal just before he was subbed off.
